Mercury Music Prize nominee Laura Marling is learning to swim – Times Online

I downloaded Laura Marling’s EP My Manic and I last April and got the CD Alas I Cannot Swim earlier this month. She’s a singer/songwriter of incredible talent. She has a seemingly simple folk style and her lyrics are complex – especially for an 18-year-old. Her talent has not gone unnoticed. She’s been nominated for this year’s Mercury Music Prize in the UK.

Check out the video below and her music on iTunes or at her official site.

NPR : Brandi Carlile Goes Straight for the Gut

Yes, another Story of the Day Poscast from NPR. Good interview and some audio snippets, too.

Brandi is headlining the “VH1 You Oughta Know Tour” and will be back in DC on September 28 at the 930 Club. Question is whether I will be able to go. The other question is who will be the supporting acts. Hmmm.

Jeff Buckley Tribute – hotshotdigital.com

It’s hard to believe this brilliant talent stopped 10 years ago – far too soon. If you don’t know about him, read his entry in Wikipedia. He had such a beautiful and distinctive voice. I recommend listening to his debut album, Grace, to hear his musical range. Jeff’s version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is the definitive one for me.

Check out the official site for more information.

Rufus Wainwright : Official Site

I’m so looking forward to this release. Everyone should listen to him at least once – such a voice! Besides, he writes some of the best lyrics and music crafted these days.

He was the opening act for the Goo Goo Dolls and Counting Crows concert I saw last night. Great songs, tight band and unpretentious presentation (and basically good to look at) – who could ask for anything more? I bought his newly released CD What’s Mine Is Yours before I left the venue. I’ve been playing it a good part of the day and I think it’s a brilliant CD. Go buy it – right now.
