NPR : McKellen Takes On Another Dark Mountain: ‘Lear’
I would kill to see this production. I love Shakespeare and I’ve seen many productions (including McKellen as Richard III here in Washington DC). I suspect this will be one of the best performances of the season. It’s already sold-out in Brooklyn and it’s only going to Minneapolis and Los Angeles in the US.
The link is for the article and the radio broadcast which includes exerpts of the performance.

I did see it, in London, and McK is at the peak of his powers. Went to a discussion with McK of over an hour(ORGANIZED BY THE Friends of the RSC), and he was more than usually forthcoming about his process. I was surprised, but he seems more relaxed now about talking about his work than he did, say 15 years ago. By the way, there is going to be a DVD of the Lear; he wrote to me in January that he was preparing for the filming that was to start almost immediately after they closed the show. (We have a sporadic correspondence going back to 1981 or so.) Anyway, McK WAS Lear; he inhabited the role; he didn’t just play it. One of the best performances I’ve ever seen by anyone (and I used to be a theatre reviewer and saw hundreds of shows).
